- Does dirt really affect my solar panel output?
Photovoltaic solar systems have been thoroughly studied over the last 25 years, and the sizing and energy prediction tools have been validated with field studies. It has been found that the output of a photovoltaic solar panel array could decrease by over 30% over a period of months due to dirt build up on the coverplate. This is particularly so in dry climates where it may not rain for months at a time, dirt build up is a significant issue with respect to solar efficiency and power output.
- How often should I have my solar panels cleaned?
After an initial clean we recommend having your solar panels cleaned every 12-36 months, depending on the general level of pollutants your panels are exposed to (e.g. being close to high traffic roads etc). Like any glass surface, your solar panels are susceptible to chemical etching from the minerals and pollutants in water (i.e. hard water staining). Regular cleaning will keep your solar panels well maintained and efficient.

How long will it take?
Depending on the size of the property the complete service can take anywhere from 1-3 hours. At the time of your quote we will give you an estimate of the timeframe involved and provide a written, fixed price quote.

What if it rains?
Firstly, once glass is clean it takes quite some time before your it becomes dirty again, whether it rains or not, so rain will not spoil newly cleaned solar panels. However, climbing on ladders and roofs when it's raining is a safety hazard, so in the case of heavy rain or ongoing drizzle we will need to re-schedule your solar panel cleaning for a mutually convenient time.

Do you give quotes over the phone?
More often then not we can determine an accurate quote for you by asking you a series of questions relating to the size and numbers of your panels, and by using Google Earth to get a view of your property without having to visit you in person.
Most surfaces have a 'surface tension' which causes water to bead in droplet form. These droplets contain impurities such as lime, calcium and sulphates. In addition most transparencies such as glass or plastic are dielectric, which means they will build up static charge on their surface.
So rain will leave deposits of both organic an inorganic soils on the solar panels. Dust and dirt particles will be also electrostatically attracted to the charge built up on the glass as they move in the wind. When glass is slightly dirty, the presence of futher moisture such as rain, or even dew, can help spread these deposits and contribute to the adhesion forces bonding the deposits to the surface.
In the case of a solar panel this dirt build up has an economic effect. The amount of energy generated by the solar array is reduced by the dirty build-up on the surface.
